Reading Regents Competency Test Preparation
1. Fill in the Blank
To help you fill in the blanks, look for words that will give you clues about the missing word.
For example: A good driver will avoid __________________ another car as he or she drives up a hill.
In this sentence, “good driver” and “avoid” give us clues about what is missing, and so do “another car” and “hill“.

3. Look for other Bad Answers
When you have a good sense of what type of word should go in the blank, and you know which answer is way off, look for other answers that don’t make any sense. Usually there will be two or three other choices that are also no good.
If you don’t know what a word means, you can’t rule it out. It might be right, even if you don’t know what it means.

4. Justify Your Answers
After you have eliminated the bad answers, you can move on to picking the correct one. You should have a reason for picking your answer though, even if its just that the other answers don’t seem right.
